Separating Small Solids

Today the first graders had to work as teams to separate a mixture of small solids. They did a great job planning and working together. They learned about using screens to help separate the mixture and how the larger particles stay on top of the screen and the smaller ones fall through.

Little Solids

Today we explored a variety of little solids: lima beans; pinto beans; mung beans; rice and cornmeal. We noticed the properties of each solid and how they were similar to liquids in bottles. What are some other little solids you know?

Exploring Liquids

Today, we began our exploration of liquids. The first graders discovered that liquids move differently! Some move fast, some move slow, some make bubbles when you shake them up and some can even make tornadoes when you spin their bottles.

Building Towers

Our new FOSS Science unit is called Solids and Liquids. This week we focused on solids and learned about the properties some solids have.  We used that knowledge to work as engineers and attempted to create the tallest towers possible. Can you find solids around your house that share some of the properties we observed: soft, flexible, rough, or transparent?

High School Authors

On Monday morning we had some very special visitors! Junior and seniors from a creative writing class at Brookfield Central High School brought the children's books they created to read to share with the first graders. Our kids were able to give them feedback about their books and get some wonderful writing role models. The books that were shared were outstanding! What a great way to see real teaching and learning in action.
